If we're learning about commas, why do we have to study verbs?

To use commas properly, you have to be able to identify (and write) a complete sentence.  To do that, you have to know your verbs.

What is a verb?

A verb is a word expressing an action or a condition of a subject.

Nancy kicked the ball. (action)
Terry is unhappy.  (condition)

There are many different types of verbs, but the simplest way to identify them is to look for action words or words that express condition (sometimes called "state of being").
